Burhan Dogançay was a celebrated Turkish-American artist renowned for his decades-long photographic and painterly documentation of urban walls, transforming torn posters, graffiti, and layered street detritus into compelling abstract compositions. His 'Walls of the World' series, begun in 1964, encompassed work from over 114 countries and became his defining contribution to contemporary art, blending street culture with abstraction and social commentary. His work is held in major international collections including the Guggenheim Museum, the British Museum, and the Smithsonian, and the Burhan Dogançay Museum in Istanbul was dedicated to his legacy in 2004.
