Barnaby Furnas is an American painter known for his energetic, large-scale works that explore themes of violence, religion, and American mythology, often depicting scenes of Civil War battles, floods, and apocalyptic imagery. His distinctive style combines gestural, expressionistic brushwork with the use of urethane paint, which he sprays and pours to create vivid, blood-red and neon hues that convey a sense of visceral urgency. Furnas emerged as a significant figure in early 2000s New York art, represented by Marianne Boesky Gallery, and has been recognized for his ability to channel historical trauma and cultural anxiety into visually explosive canvases.
