Laverne Nelson Black

Laverne Nelson Black (1887, 1938) was an American painter renowned for his vibrant and atmospheric depictions of Native American life, particularly scenes of ceremonial dances and pueblo culture in the American Southwest. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and was deeply influenced by his time spent among the Hopi and Navajo peoples of New Mexico and Arizona. His work captures the color, movement, and spiritual essence of Indigenous traditions with bold, expressive brushwork.
