The Descent from the Cross: Second Plate
Rembrandt's etching and engraving depicts the poignant moment of Christ's removal from the cross, rendered with dramatic chiaroscuro and emotional intensity characteristic of the artist's religious works. This later impression of the sixth state shows considerable wear to the plate, evidence of its circulation and multiple printings over time. The composition's complex interplay of light and shadow, combined with Rembrandt's masterful handling of the print medium, creates a deeply moving meditation on Christ's Passion and sacrifice.
