Walter Spies (1895–1942) was a German-born painter, musician, and polymath who became one of the most influential Western artists to settle in Bali, Indonesia, where he spent much of his adult life. His works vividly capture the mystical landscapes, rituals, and daily life of Bali, blending European modernism with indigenous Indonesian visual traditions. Spies played a pivotal role in shaping Western perceptions of Balinese culture and helped develop the island's tourism and arts scene in the 1930s.
