Vasudeo Santu Gaitonde was one of India's most celebrated abstract painters, widely regarded as a pioneer of non-objective art in the country. Deeply influenced by Zen Buddhism and the New York School, he developed a meditative, introspective style characterized by luminous, layered surfaces and an absence of figurative elements. His works command some of the highest prices ever achieved by an Indian artist at auction, with pieces regularly fetching crores at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Pundole's.
