Toshimitsu Imai (1928–2002) was a pioneering Japanese abstract painter who became one of the most internationally recognized Japanese artists of the postwar era. He studied in Paris in the 1950s and became associated with the École de Paris, developing a richly textured, gestural abstract style characterized by bold impasto, vibrant color, and dynamic compositional energy. His work bridges Japanese sensibility with Western abstract expressionism, and he exhibited widely across Europe, the United States, and Japan throughout his career.
