Sam Durant is an American conceptual artist whose work engages critically with political history, social justice, and cultural memory, often drawing on the legacies of the civil rights movement, colonialism, and counterculture. Working across sculpture, installation, drawing, and text, Durant confronts difficult histories with materials and forms that challenge viewers to reckon with systemic inequalities and unresolved injustices. He is a professor at CalArts and gained significant international attention, as well as controversy, for works that interrogate structures of power and punishment.
