Nicolaes Maes was a Dutch Golden Age painter and pupil of Rembrandt, celebrated for his genre scenes, portraits, and religious compositions. He worked in his native Dordrecht for two decades before returning to Amsterdam, where he became the leading portrait painter of the final three decades of the 17th century. Maes made significant contributions to the development of genre painting in the Netherlands.
