Naoya Hatakeyama (born 1958) is a Japanese photographer celebrated for his large-scale images that examine the intersections of landscape, industry, and urban transformation. His work explores how human activity, quarrying, tunneling, and city-building, reshapes the natural and built environment, often rendering industrial sites with an austere, almost sublime beauty. He is widely regarded as one of Japan's most significant contemporary photographers, with major series including 'Lime Works,' 'Blast,' and 'Underground,' and his practice took on renewed personal resonance after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami affected his hometown of Rikuzentakata.
