Michael Disfarmer (born Michael Meyers, 1884, 1959) was an American self-taught photographer who spent most of his career in Heber Springs, Arkansas, producing remarkably intimate and psychologically penetrating studio portraits of rural Arkansans. His stark, unadorned style captured the dignity and complexity of everyday working-class Americans during the Depression and World War II eras. Rediscovered posthumously, his work has been celebrated as an important contribution to American vernacular and documentary photography.
