María Izquierdo (1902–1955) was a pioneering Mexican painter celebrated for her vibrant, emotionally charged works that blended indigenous Mexican traditions with modernist and Surrealist influences. She was the first Mexican woman to exhibit her paintings in the United States, gaining international recognition during the 1930s. Her oeuvre includes intimate portraits, still lifes, and circus scenes rendered in bold colors and a distinctly personal visual language.
