Laurence Stephen Lowry (1887–1976) was a British painter celebrated for his distinctive depictions of industrial landscapes in Northwest England, particularly the mill towns of Lancashire and Greater Manchester. Working largely in isolation for much of his career, he developed a highly recognizable style featuring matchstick-like figures set against smoky, hazy urban backdrops painted in a limited palette dominated by whites and greys. Though initially overlooked by the mainstream art establishment, Lowry is now regarded as one of the most important British artists of the 20th century, beloved for his empathetic portrayal of working-class life.
