Julia Wachtel

Julia Wachtel is an American artist known for her appropriation-based paintings that combine imagery from mass media, advertising, and popular culture to explore themes of emotion, communication, and social conditioning. Working primarily in painting, she juxtaposes found imagery—including cartoon characters, product advertisements, and news photographs—to examine how meaning is constructed and manipulated through visual culture. Her work, which gained prominence in the 1980s alongside the Pictures Generation, has been widely exhibited internationally and continues to engage critically with consumerism and spectacle.
