John William Godward was an English Neo-Classicist painter known for his idealized depictions of women in classical Greco-Roman settings. A protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, he mastered the rendering of marble, fabric, and light with remarkable detail and technical precision. His work fell out of favor with the rise of modernism, and he died in obscurity, reportedly lamenting that the world was not big enough for both himself and Picasso.
