James Van Der Zee (1886–1983) was a pioneering American photographer best known for his documentary and portrait work capturing the vibrant life of Harlem during the 1920s and 1930s, a period known as the Harlem Renaissance. His richly detailed images depicted African American middle-class life, funerals, churches, and celebrities, creating an invaluable visual archive of Black culture and identity in New York City. Rediscovered through the 1969 Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition 'Harlem on My Mind,' Van Der Zee is now recognized as one of the most significant photographers in American history.
