Gustave Baumann (1881–1971) was a German-born American artist celebrated for his mastery of color woodblock printmaking, a technique he elevated to a fine art in the United States. He is best known for his luminous landscapes of the American Southwest, particularly scenes of New Mexico, where he settled in Santa Fe in 1918 and remained for the rest of his life. Baumann's meticulous craftsmanship, rich color palette, and ability to capture the spirit of regional American life made him one of the most significant printmakers of the early twentieth century.
