Emile Claus (1849–1924) was a leading Belgian Impressionist painter celebrated for his luminous depictions of rural life along the Lys River in Flanders. He developed a distinctive style he called 'Luminism,' capturing the effects of sunlight on water, fields, and peasant scenes with vibrant, broken brushwork. His idyllic landscapes and genre scenes made him one of the most acclaimed Belgian painters of his era, and his work continues to achieve strong results at international auction houses.
