Craigie Aitchison (1926, 2009) was a Scottish painter celebrated for his distinctive, luminous style characterised by simplified forms, vivid flat colours, and deeply personal imagery. He is best known for his series of Crucifixion paintings, portraits, and depictions of his Bedlington terrier dogs set against radiant, often otherworldly backgrounds. Elected a Royal Academician in 1988, he became one of Britain's most beloved and distinctive figurative painters, widely admired for the spiritual intensity and quiet emotional power of his work.
