Charles Bargue was a French academic painter and lithographer best known for his meticulous draftsmanship and his influential drawing course, the 'Cours de dessin,' co-developed with Jean-Léon Gérôme, which became a foundational tool for art students worldwide. He specialized in Orientalist subjects and genre scenes, producing highly finished works celebrated for their technical precision and luminous detail. Despite his relatively small body of work, his paintings command significant prices at auction, particularly among collectors of 19th-century academic and Orientalist art.
