Charles Alston (1907, 1977) was a pioneering African American painter, sculptor, muralist, and educator whose work spanned the Harlem Renaissance and beyond. Known for his expressive figural compositions and abstract explorations, he depicted African American life, history, and culture with dignity and power. A central figure in the Harlem art community, Alston mentored generations of artists and created landmark murals including the historic works for Harlem Hospital in the 1930s.
