Auguste Herbin (1882–1960) was a French painter and a pioneering figure in geometric abstraction, who transitioned from early Cubist experimentation to a rigorous system of pure non-figurative art. He is best known for developing his 'Plastic Alphabet,' a theoretical system linking colors, forms, and musical notes to create harmonious abstract compositions. Herbin was a founding member of the Abstraction-Création group and remains a seminal influence on the development of hard-edge abstraction and Op Art in the 20th century.
