Art & Language is a collaborative conceptual art group founded in Coventry, England in 1968, initially by Terry Atkinson, David Bainbridge, Michael Baldwin, and Harold Hurrell, with American critic and artist Joseph Kosuth later joining. The group is considered a foundational force in Conceptual Art, producing text-based works, essays, paintings, and installations that interrogate the theoretical and linguistic foundations of art itself. Their practice challenged traditional notions of art-making by foregrounding language, critique, and institutional analysis, and they remain highly influential in contemporary art discourse.
