Shusaku Arakawa (1936–2010) was a Japanese-born avant-garde artist and theorist who worked primarily in New York, known for his complex text-and-image paintings that explore philosophy, language, and perception. His large-scale works often incorporate diagrams, written phrases, and abstract forms to investigate how meaning is constructed and how the human body orients itself in space. Together with poet Madeline Gins, he developed the concept of 'reversible destiny,' an ambitious philosophical and architectural project aimed at overcoming human mortality through built environments.
