Lawrence Carroll (1954–2019) was an American-born, Rome-based painter known for his meditative, materially rich canvases that often incorporate found objects, wax, paint, and fabric layered over unconventional supports. His work explored themes of time, memory, and fragility, employing a restrained, almost monochromatic palette that evoked both ruin and quietude. Carroll was widely exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale, and was celebrated for bridging Arte Povera sensibilities with a deeply personal abstract language.
