Rackstraw Downes is a realist painter known for his panoramic landscape paintings created through extended observation on site. His works depict urban edges, industrial sites, and natural landscapes across elongated horizontal formats. His paintings are held in collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, and he received a MacArthur Fellowship.
