d.o.p.e.

2000

Thomas Ruff's remarkable set of four archival pigment prints on rag paper (2022-2023) represents the contemporary artist's most ambitious exploration of algorithmic abstraction, where mathematical precision generates hallucinatory, fractal-like compositions that challenge our understanding of natural versus artificial imagery.  Published in a limited edition of 40 + 5 AP, each print is hand-signed and numbered by the artist, with three vertical works (70 × 55 cm) and one horizontal work (70 × 100 cm) forming a cohesive visual meditation on digital perception. The d.o.pe.  series exemplifies Ruff's continued investigation into how contemporary  photography  and digital tools reshape our visual experience in the 21st century. "In early 2000, an initial attempt to create these objects myself on the computer failed because the programs available at the time did not achieve the desired precision. But twenty years later, a new software enabled me to visualize the beauty of mathematics as well as generate those ‘psychedelic’ images that appear natural but are completely artificial. (...) When I started working on d.o.pe., I felt it was time to think about these fantastical images, images that don’t make sense at all, that just show up. They play a major part in perception and the discussions about the ways it operates.” - Thomas Ruff
