Gerhard Richter — Kerze III (Candle III)
Gerhard Richter

Kerze III (Candle III)

A luminous candle flame emerges from the tension between Richter's signature squeegee-dragged black oil paint and the underlying offset lithograph's vivid primary colors. The mechanical reproduction of the printed image is disrupted and partially obscured by the gestural, hand-applied black layer, creating a dialogue between photographic representation and painterly abstraction. The result is a hauntingly atmospheric work in which the symbolic warmth of candlelight is paradoxically rendered through darkness and obscuration.

Medium
Black oil paint applied by hand with a squeegee over offset lithograph in yellow, red, blue and black, on white offset board, the full sheet, mounted on white plastic (as issued),
