Right wing, left wing
1991
Two vast, monochromatic canvases stretch outward like the weathered wings of some fallen mythological creature, their surfaces built up with thick, encrusted layers of emulsion and oil that evoke scorched earth and ancient ruin. Dried plant matter is embedded into the turbulent, heavily textured fields, their brittle organic forms simultaneously suggesting growth and decay, life entombed within matter. The diptych format echoes Kiefer's persistent meditation on duality and German history, the symmetrical yet tension-filled composition implying a broken balance between opposing forces.
