The Monastery of St George, Wadi Kelt
David Bomberg's "The Monastery of St George, Wadi Kelt" depicts the ancient Greek Orthodox monastery nestled within the dramatic cliffs of the Judean Desert, rendered in the artist's characteristic bold, angular style that simplifies the landscape into geometric forms. The painting captures the interplay of light and shadow across the ochre and rust colored stone architecture and surrounding terrain, emphasizing the monastery's isolated position within the rugged natural setting. Bomberg's approach transforms the historical site into an abstracted composition that balances representational elements with modernist formal concerns, reflecting his interest in the spiritual and visual power of ancient places.

As Richard Cork (1987) observes, Bomberg appears to have worked independently, rather than under formal commission, during his sojourn at this site - a circumstance Cork interprets as conducive to a heightened sense of artistic freedom and vitality. In this context, Bomberg engages the monastery and its craggy environs with renewed expressive energy. His application of thick impasto evokes the harsh intensity of the sun-scorched landscape, with brushstrokes that convey the dense, intractable weight of heat; their coarseness mirrors the unyielding character of the terrain itself. The restrained palette further reinforces the bleached stillness of the desert, with colours subdued beneath an oppressive, arid light, as though the landscape has been parched by relentless solar exposure.
