Two Flags
1985
A powerful monochromatic work depicting two American flags rendered in flowing black ink on plastic, characteristic of Jasper Johns's lifelong interrogation of patriotic symbolism and perception. The gestural, almost torched quality of the ink creates a dramatic, shadowy effect that dissolves the flags' familiar structure into abstract washes of dark tone. Executed in 1985, this work belongs to Johns's extended engagement with the flag motif that defines his career from the mid-1950s onward. Held in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, it was gifted by The American Contemporary Art Foundation, Inc., with Leonard A. Lauder as President.
