Zak Smith (also known as Zak Sabbath) is an American artist and illustrator known for his densely layered, maximalist drawings and paintings that blend punk aesthetics, comic book influences, and fine art traditions. He gained significant recognition for his project 'Pictures Showing What Happens on Each Page of Thomas Pynchon's Novel Gravity's Rainbow,' a monumental series of 760 illustrations that earned him the Yale Gertrude Stein Award. His work often incorporates text, pop culture references, and intricate mark-making, straddling the line between high art and underground subculture.
