Sir Stanley Spencer (1891–1959) was one of the most distinctive British painters of the 20th century, known for his highly personal and visionary works that blended Christian religious themes with the everyday life of his beloved English village of Cookham, Berkshire. His style combined a meticulous, almost naive figurative technique with deeply spiritual and often eccentric imagery, most famously seen in his monumental 'Resurrection, Cookham' (1924–27). Spencer's unique ability to find the sacred within the mundane made him a singular figure in British art, simultaneously celebrated and controversial during his lifetime.
