The Silence=Death Collective was a New York-based activist art group formed in 1986 by six gay men — Avram Finkelstein, Brian Howard, Oliver Johnston, Charles Kreloff, Chris Lione, and Jorge Socarrás — who created the iconic 'Silence=Death' poster featuring a pink triangle on a black background as a response to the AIDS crisis. The image became one of the most recognizable symbols of AIDS activism and was later adopted by ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), amplifying its reach as a rallying cry for political action and visibility. Their graphic design work sits at the intersection of political activism and visual art, employing bold, minimal imagery to communicate urgent social messages.
