Shimaoka Tatsuzo (1919–2007) was a celebrated Japanese mingei (folk craft) potter renowned for his mastery of jomon-zogan (rope-inlaid) stoneware, a technique he developed under the tutelage of the legendary Hamada Shoji in Mashiko. He was designated a Living National Treasure of Japan in 1996 for his exceptional contributions to pottery, blending traditional folk aesthetics with refined craftsmanship. His works are highly sought after in international auction markets for their earthy textures, bold slip-trailed decoration, and deep connection to the mingei philosophy of beauty in everyday objects.
