Pieter Codde was a Dutch Golden Age painter born in Amsterdam in 1599, best known for his small-scale interior scenes depicting elegant company, guardroom subjects, and merry gatherings. He was a close follower of Frans Hals, notably completing Hals' unfinished large group portrait 'The Meagre Company' in 1637. His works are distinguished by their subtle tonal quality, delicate rendering of fabric and light, and lively depictions of bourgeois social life in 17th-century Holland.
