O. Winston Link (1914–2001) was an American commercial and fine art photographer best known for his dramatic documentation of the Norfolk and Western Railway's steam locomotive operations in the late 1950s, capturing the last years of steam-powered rail travel in America. Working primarily at night with elaborate synchronized flash lighting systems of his own design, Link created technically stunning and emotionally evocative images that juxtapose the power of steam engines against the everyday life of rural Appalachian communities. His meticulously staged photographs are celebrated as both important historical documents and masterworks of mid-20th century photography.
