Narayan Shridhar Bendre (1910, 1992) was one of India's most celebrated modernist painters, known for his vibrant use of colour and his ability to synthesise Western techniques with Indian sensibilities. He studied at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai and later in Europe and the United States, which profoundly influenced his evolution from a naturalistic to a more abstract, pointillist style. His works, ranging from figurative compositions to lyrical abstractions, have commanded significant prices at major auction houses including Christie's and Sotheby's.
