Lin Fengmian (1900–1991) was a pioneering Chinese modernist painter who studied in France and became one of the first artists to synthesize Western modernism with traditional Chinese ink painting techniques. As the founding principal of the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, he profoundly shaped modern Chinese art education and championed artistic freedom. His work, characterized by bold colors, expressive brushwork, and lyrical imagery, bridged East and West in a uniquely personal style.
