Léon Spilliaert was a self-taught Belgian Symbolist artist born in Ostend in 1881, known for his hauntingly atmospheric works in watercolor, ink, and pastel. Largely self-educated, he drew inspiration from the writings of Maurice Maeterlinck and Edgar Allan Poe, creating eerily evocative interiors, seascapes, and self-portraits that blur the line between dream and reality. His distinctive use of vertiginous perspective and muted, nocturnal palettes earned him recognition as one of the most enigmatic figures of early twentieth-century European art.
