John Singleton Copley was an American-born painter renowned for his portrait work among the colonial elite of New England before relocating to London in 1774. He achieved great success in England both as a portraitist and as a history painter, notable for his innovative use of modern subjects and contemporary dress. His later career declined significantly, and he died heavily in debt, leaving behind a legacy as one of the foremost painters of the colonial and Georgian eras.
