Giovanni Lanfranco (1582–1647) was an Italian Baroque painter born in Parma, who trained under Agostino Carracci and later became a pivotal figure in the development of illusionistic ceiling painting in Rome. His masterpiece, the dome fresco of Sant'Andrea della Valle in Rome, was groundbreaking in its dynamic use of foreshortening and swirling figures, directly influencing later Baroque decorators. Lanfranco spent his later career in Naples, where he left a profound impact on the local painting tradition.
