George Romney (1734–1802) was one of the most celebrated British portrait painters of the eighteenth century, renowned for his elegant and flattering likenesses of aristocratic and upper-class sitters. He rivaled Sir Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough in popularity, producing hundreds of portraits during his long career in London. Romney is perhaps best known for his numerous idealized portraits of Emma Hamilton, the future Lady Hamilton and muse who captivated him in the 1780s and 1790s.
