Friedrich Schröder-Sonnenstern (1892–1982) was a German outsider artist whose fantastical and often grotesque drawings earned him recognition as one of the most significant figures in Art Brut and Outsider Art. Working primarily in colored pencil, he created bizarre, otherworldly compositions populated by strange hybrid figures, erotic imagery, and apocalyptic visions, often infused with dark humor and social satire. His work was championed by André Breton and the Surrealists, and he gained international attention in the 1950s and 1960s despite having spent much of his earlier life in psychiatric institutions and on the margins of society.
