Fred Herzog (1930–2019) was a German-born Canadian photographer celebrated for his pioneering use of Kodachrome colour slide film to document the streets of Vancouver from the 1950s onward, decades before colour photography was accepted as a fine art medium. His candid, humanist images of urban life, storefronts, neon signs, and working-class neighbourhoods captured a vivid, now-vanished world with remarkable compositional sophistication. Herzog is widely regarded as a seminal figure in the history of colour street photography and a key chronicler of mid-century Vancouver.
