Fred Brathwaite, known as Fab 5 Freddy, is a Brooklyn-born artist, filmmaker, and hip-hop pioneer who emerged from the New York graffiti and street art scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s. His visual art practice bridges graffiti, pop art, and conceptual work, often incorporating Campbell's Soup can imagery as homage to Andy Warhol and exploring the intersections of street culture and fine art. As a cultural ambassador who helped bring hip-hop and graffiti to mainstream audiences, he is also celebrated for his role as the original host of Yo! MTV Raps and his collaborations with artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring.
