Deborah Luster is an American photographer known for her poetic and empathetic documentary work, particularly her long-term projects exploring communities affected by violence, incarceration, and trauma in the American South. Her seminal series 'One Big Self: Prisoners of Louisiana' (2000-2003) documented inmates at Louisiana state prisons using a tintype-inspired process on aluminum, blending historical photographic traditions with contemporary social documentary. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and she has received awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.
