Conroy Maddox (1914–2005) was one of Britain's foremost Surrealist painters, widely regarded as the only English artist to have maintained an unbroken commitment to the Surrealist movement from the 1930s until his death. His work explored dreamlike imagery, eroticism, and the uncanny through a distinctive visual language that combined meticulous technique with deeply subversive content. Maddox was a central figure in the Birmingham Surrealist group and remained a passionate advocate for Surrealism's radical and liberatory potential throughout his long career.
