Bùi Xuân Phái (1920, 1988) was one of Vietnam's most celebrated painters, renowned for his evocative depictions of Hanoi's Old Quarter, a subject so closely associated with him that the genre became known as 'Phố Phái' (Phái's Streets). Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine, he developed a distinctive style blending Post-Impressionist influences with a deeply personal, melancholic sensibility, characterized by muted earth tones, expressive brushwork, and crumbling architectural facades. Considered a master of Vietnamese modern art, his works have gained significant recognition both domestically and at international auction houses.
