Balthasar van der Ast was a Dutch Golden Age painter renowned for his exquisite still life compositions featuring flowers, shells, insects, and fruit. A pupil and brother-in-law of Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder, he became one of the most significant still life painters of the early 17th century, working in Middelburg, Utrecht, and Delft. His meticulous attention to detail and vibrant naturalism made his works highly sought after by collectors, and they continue to command significant prices at major auction houses.
